Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, cleans the canals and seals them so the tooth can heal and function again. Does it hurt?

The pain people associate with root canals is usually the pain of the infection that made the treatment necessary. The procedure itself is done under local anaesthetic. Most patients describe the appointment as long rather than painful, and the relief afterwards as immediate.

Afterwards

Mild tenderness for a few days is normal and settles. Avoid chewing hard food on the tooth until the final restoration is placed. If pain increases rather than decreases, call the clinic — that is worth checking.

Before you book

Often one or two, depending on the tooth, the number of canals and whether there is active infection. Molars generally take longer than front teeth.

A tooth that has had a root canal has lost internal structure and its blood supply, which makes it more likely to fracture. A crown holds it together.

In the short term, usually. But replacing a missing tooth later — with a bridge or an implant — costs more than keeping the natural one. Keeping the tooth is almost always the better long-term decision when it is possible.
