Crowns & bridges

Search for the price of almost any dental treatment in India and you get a range so wide it is useless — often a five-fold spread for the same procedure name. That spread is real, and most of it is explainable.

1. The procedure name hides the work

"Root canal" covers a single-canal front tooth and a four-canal molar with an abscess. "Crown" covers half a dozen materials with genuinely different lifespans. "Implant" covers the fixture alone or the fixture, abutment and crown together. Two quotes for the same word are frequently quotes for different treatment.

2. What is and is not included

This is the single biggest source of apparent price difference. Ask explicitly whether the quote includes the examination, radiographs, the restoration that follows, review appointments, and any laboratory work. A root canal quoted without the crown is roughly half a treatment.

3. City tier

Metro clinics carry metro rents and metro salaries. The same treatment in a district town is generally less, and the clinical result is not automatically worse — the correlation between price and quality in dentistry is much weaker than people assume, in both directions.

4. Materials and laboratory

Crown and denture costs are substantially laboratory costs. A well-made restoration from a good lab costs more and fits better, and fit is what decides whether the tooth underneath survives the next decade. This is a poor place to economise, and a reasonable place to ask what you are getting.

5. Who is doing it

A specialist charges more than a general dentist, and for a difficult case that is money well spent. For a straightforward one it may not be. A practice worth trusting will tell you which of the two you have.

What a fair quote looks like

  • In writing, itemised, before treatment starts
  • The restoration that follows included, or its absence stated plainly
  • A clear note of what would change it — an extra canal, an unexpected crack
  • The no-treatment option and its consequences
  • No pressure to decide the same day

The comparison that actually matters

Not clinic A against clinic B for one procedure. It is the cost of treating the problem now against the cost of what it becomes. A filling becomes a root canal becomes a crown becomes an extraction becomes an implant, and each step costs a multiple of the one before. Almost every genuinely expensive dental problem started as a cheap one that waited.

For treatment at this clinic, call and describe the problem: you will be given a range before you travel, and a firm figure after the examination, before anything starts.

General information only. It is not a substitute for an examination — book an appointment for advice about your own teeth.

Common questions

Questions people ask

Lower overheads, salaries and laboratory costs, not lower standards by default. Quality varies within India as it does anywhere — judge the clinic, not the country.
Compare what is included first. A root canal quoted with the crown and one quoted without are not the same treatment.
For difficult cases, usually. For straightforward ones, often not. A practice you can trust will tell you which yours is.
